Exam Preparation

X-Ray

Plain X-Rays

No preparation is required.

Mammography

Please do not use deodorant or talcum powder on the day of the examination. Bring previous mammogram films for comparison.

Barium Meal and Swallow

Nothing to eat or drink from midnight.

Barium Enema

Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)

Please contact our practice for preparation instructions.

Ultrasound

Upper Abdominal Ultrasound

Nothing to eat or drink from midnight, the night before your examination. Continue to take medication as necessary with a small sip of water.

Pelvic & Renal Ultrasounds, Obstetric Ultrasounds (less than 22 weeks)

You will require a full bladder for this examination. You may eat normally.  Go to the toilet and empty your bladder 1.5 hours before your appointment. Then drink 1 litre of water (approximately 6 large glasses). Finish drinking this water 30 minutes before your appointment.  Do not empty your bladder after you finish drinking the water.

Obstetric Ultrasounds (more than 22 weeks)

No preparation required.

Neck & Carotid Ultrasounds

No preparation required.

DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)

Renal Arteries

Please contact our practice for preparation instructions.

Abdominal Aorta Doppler

You will need to fast for four hours prior to your appointment. You may drink plenty of water prior to your examination.

CT Scan +/- Fluoroscopy

CT Spine, Sinus and Extremities

No preparation required.

CT Brain, Chest

Please fast for four hours.  Please drink plenty of water before your examination (at least four large glasses).

CT Abdomen & Pelvis

Please fast for four hours.  Please attend our practice 1 hour prior to your appointment as you will need to drink oral contrast.  Please drink plenty of water before your examination (at least four large glasses).

CT Angiography

Please fast for four hours.  Please drink plenty of water before your examination (at least four large glasses).

Biopsy

Biopsy Under Ultrasound
